Calligraphy Art Transcending the Mind: The Expression of Buddhism through Ms. Jan’s Calligraphy

By Chen Shufen

From the Diamond Sutra: “The mind should act without any attachments. All conditioned phenomena are like a dream, an illusion, a bubble, a shadow, like dew or a flash of lightning. Thus we shall perceive them.” Calligrapher Ms. Jan Hsiu-Jung likes to transcribe the verses to the Diamond Sutra to spread the Sutra’s blissful messages. She said, “Diamond Sutra should not be taken merely literally; one must understand its underlying meaning and philosophy. “All appearances are illusory. To see that appearances are not appearances is to see the Tathagata (Buddha).” Ms. Jan emphasizes that when confronting different situations in life, one must learn to overcome one’s inflexibility. If we are less stubborn, then our lives will be more enriched and happiness will ensue.

A former recipient of “World’s Outstanding Person of the Year Award”, the honor was bestowed on Ms. Jan for her world-renowned excellence in the art of Chinese calligraphy. Ms. Jan’s signature fretwork-style calligraphy, calligraphy written on multiple material and surfaces, and calligraphy on a microscopic scale have been described as the “Three Superb Skills in Calligraphy”.

Calligraphy Art Transcending the Mind refers to spreading Buddhism aspects of compassion, love, and sacrifice, through calligraphy of sutras. This embodies Ms. Jan’s artistic creativity at the highest level. Ms. Jan said, “Every creation comes from my loving heart from within. I may even forgo food or sleep when I am working because I receive so much joy from it.” Regardless of media that is used (which include rice grain, egg, shells, toothpick, porcelain, bamboo plates, jade), or the use of thin-stroke technique in creating fretwork-style calligraphy, and/or large scale portrait artwork of figures (such as Buddha, Guanyin, the Statue of Liberty, etc.), Ms. Jan is very much focused on her works. Ms. Jan’s mind is free of all distractions as she strives to complete the entire work in one setting.
Buddhism Ideals Personified in Thirty-thousand Characters Scripture

Ms. Jan is particularly proud of one of her works in the shape of a box that was carved out of Taiwan cypress wood. She spent more than four months, using a special carving technique to meticulously transcribe the words of Diamond Sutra along the wood grain lines many times over. When examining the work through a magnifying glass, one can see more than 30,000 “tiny dots” of calligraphy characters in very fine detail that is an amazing feat of grace.

“Lotus Sutra” is one of Ms. Jan’s calligraphy works using the creative fretwork technique, and has been in possession of a national monastery in Bhutan. In 2004, the royal family of Bhutan invited Ms. Jan on a pilgrimage, and she gifted the work of Lotus Sutra to Bhutan, whose population practices predominately Buddhism, as a symbol of good well. Rabjam Rinpoche of the Shechen Monastery accepted the work on behalf of the royal family.

At the 2005 Hong Kong/Taiwan fundraiser for victims affected by the South Asian tsunami, Ms. Jan, acting as the director of North America ET Foundation, donated another Lotus Sutra work for auction at a charity. The work successfully raised more than one million NTD and all proceeds were donated to the victims of the South Asian tsunami.

Experiences the Agony of Sickness Forms Inspiration for Scripture Transcription

Ms. Jan was born in 1956 in a rustic, traditional Hakka farming village in Guanxi Township, Hsinchu County to a poor family. At an early age, she found her passion in calligraphy and practiced diligently every day. At the age of 20, Ms. Jan became an accountant at a company that produced electronics. Her employer’s elderly mother suffered from cervical cancer. Ms. Jan helped take care of her. One day, the elderly woman took Ms. Jan’s hand and told her, “I had lived a very frugal life, but the money I saved is now spent on intravenous injections; it’s such a waste of my savings…” When her employer’s mother finally passed away, she had spent the last of her savings on her medical care. Her death ultimately had a major impact on Ms. Jan as she realized that nothing is permanent in life and that she needs to seize the moment.

Ms. Jan married Mr. Chiang Chin-Shuen, a man who is 11 years her senior and also from her township. Mr. Chiang Chin-Shuen was from a poor family. He studied hard and was accepted to Fu Jen Catholic University. However, he could not to afford the expensive tuition, so he attended the Maritime Academy instead, and graduated four years later with honors. In 1989, during a routine health check, Mr. Chiang Chin-Shuen was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer. Doctor estimated that he had only six months to live. The young couple was devastated. Nonetheless, Ms. Jan decided to help her husband to fight the cancer. Ms. Jan searched all over for treatments; she went as far as Mainland China where she spent NTD 900,000 to buy medicines which were ineffective.

Ms. Jan recalled that her husband’s illness had depleted all of their saving as they went into debt. A Buddhist sister nun came to her and asked her if she would be willing to go to the temple to chant and pray. Ms. Jan thought if she went to the temple to chant and pray, who would take care of her family? But to show her sincerity, she went in front of the Buddha and took a lifelong vow to transcribe the scriptures if her husband’s pain can be relieved. Since then, Ms. Jan started transcribing scriptures with her husband by her side drawing illustrations. One time Mr. Chiang Chin-Shuen drew an outline of Guanyin and asked Ms. Jan if she could transcribe Guanyin Pu-men Scripture along the edges of the outline. Ms. Jan was intrigued by the idea as she started copying the Scripture with a fine brush like her husband had suggested. She completed the work within one month, working day and night.

Many wondered why it took Ms. Jan so long to finish the work on Guanyin until they use a magnifying glass to look at the skirt region of the Guanyin which contains a hidden scripture. Perhaps transcribing the scriptures had helped to calm her mind and Ms. Jan’s husband lived 5 years and 6 months longer than what doctor had originally predicated. The cancer cells later metastasized to the neck area and the bones were visible from the rotting of the flesh. Ms. Jan is grateful that Mrs. Dai Meiyu, wife of Mr. Wu Poh-Hsiung, came to visit her husband during his illness. A month before Ms. Jan’s husband passed away, Ms. Jan’s husband was almost completely bed-ridden. The former Director of Health Mr. Chang Po-Yah came for a visit. Mr. Chiang Chin-Shuen mustered one last bit of strength to stand up and greet Mr. Chang Po-Yah. It would be the last time he posed for a photo standing up.

Determined to Help Others Through Calligraphy. A Lifelong Pact of Husband and Wife

Mr. Chiang Chin-Shuen wrote in his will, “I am most thankful that she let the patient live with hope and dignity. During my illness, you wrote calligraphy and I drew. Although I will not live to the day to see my charity take flight, nonetheless my mind is illuminated.” On June of 1995, half year after her husband passed away, Ms. Jan, discovered that he had left her a letter thanking her. Later, she would dream that her husband wishes that she will continue working in her calligraphy pursuits.

“My husband was cancer-stricken for six years. To make him happy, I entered and won numerous awards in calligraphy competitions.” said Ms. Jan. The following year after her husband passed away, Ms. Jan took her daughter and son and immigrated to the United States. In the next 20 years, her daughter obtained two masters degrees and the CPA license. Her son became a successful entrepreneur. Ms. Jan was selected as a model mother and later became the president of the association.

“I missed a lot of time when my children were growing up because I needed to be in seclusion when I worked and I never had enough time.” said Ms. Jan. During the harsh winter months of Michigan, she spent countless days working in solitude. Yet she has no regrets, because she wants to use calligraphy to honor the lifelong pact she made with her husband.

Ms. Jan sincerely prayed for her husband’s recovery as she transcribed the scriptures. Although Ms. Jan was unable to save her husband’s life in the end, but as fate would have it, she became an outstanding calligrapher in a series of twist and turns. Through exposure to Buddhism, Ms. Jan realized that our bodies will age and decay and there is no need to be emotional over it. Our life is but a dream; everything disappears eventually. There is nothing that we cannot leave behind.

A Peaceful Negotiation Creates a Win for Both Sides. Witnessing a Historical Moment.

A work entitled “A Peaceful Negotiation Creates a Win for All”. In November 2008, during the first cross-strait meeting between China and Taiwan, Mr. Chiang Pin-Kung, the chairman of Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) presented to Mr. Chen Yun-Lin, chairman of Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) a fretwork calligraphy in pure gold ink entitled “A Peaceful Negotiation Creates a Win for All”. Ms. Jan created the work which contained more than six thousands tiny gold characters surrounding the eight main characters. Ms. Jan spent seven days and nights to complete the work, a severe test of her physical limitation. “Every character conveys strength, but one also needs to account for artistry and the overall ratio aspect.“, said Ms. Jan. The work is not merely a piece of art, but also contains the historical meeting’s negotiation contents. The strength used and the fact that gold inks do not fade further symbolize cross-strait history and effective negotiations. Ms. Jan gifted the work for the occasion as it served an important purpose for the historic moment.

“Cherish blessing begets more blessings; cherish relationship garners more relationships.“, said Ms. Jan. In 2013, Ms. Jan created another fretwork in pure gold ink entitled “Cross-strait Achievements” for SEF as a parting gift to Mr. Chen Yun-Lin, as his term in ARATS was coming to an end, to express gratitude for all of Mr. Chen’s contributions in promoting peaceful cross-strait relations. To this end, Ms. Jan feels an intangible sense of accomplishment aside from creating calligraphy works.

Ms. Jan maintains an attitude of “speak kind words, do good deeds, and have a kind heart“ whenever the topic cross-strait relations arise. “Life itself is a series of trial and tribulations. When encountering any situation, do not take it personally, only then may the person live at ease.” Ms. Jan points out the so-called “at ease“ means “one should not be present“. It is then that one may truely let go and be at ease. Interaction between individuals embodies the same principle.

Charity Fundraising for Disaster Relief. Works of Art for Charitable Functions Only and Not for Sale.

When a powerful earthquake devastated Taiwan on September 21, 1999, Ms. Jan donated 10 of her Buddhist scripture calligraphy works to charity for disaster relief. In 2005’s “Sending Love to South Asia Fundraiser”, Ms. Jan again donated Buddhist scripture calligraphy works for charitable auctions. Ms. Jan also generously donated to the Greater New York Chinese Education Foundation which aided economically disadvantaged ethnic Chinese students. In 2009, in celebration of completion of Jan Clan Great Hall in Jiangxi Wuyuan (China), Ms. Jan donated four works with all sale proceeds earmarked for the construction fund of the Great Hall. In 2011, the Japanese International Peace Federation honored Ms. Jan in recognition of her fundraising efforts for the 2011 Tohoku earthquake in Japan. In 2012, Chinese Culture Association elected Ms. Jan to its board and the following year she represented Taiwan in attendance of Cross-Strait Public Interest Conference held in Xiamen. Also in 2012, Ms. Jan auctioned off her work of Diamond Sutra for USD 30,000 to raise fund for the Hurricane Sandy disaster relief effort. In 2013, Ms. Jan established a charitable trust for the purpose of providing benefit to the community through charitable sales of her works.

Ms. Jan has always maintained that her works are to be sold for charitable causes only and not for sale publicly. On, September 6th, 2013, Ms. Jan held a calligraphy exhibition in Everrich Corporation’s Taipei headquarters. CEO Mr. Xi-Xiang Wu, in his thank you speech to Ms. Jan, praised Ms. Jan for elevating Everrich’s brand value through the exhibition. Mr. Wu remarked that because Ms. Jan’s works “represent intangible cultural assets, and cannot be bought even if one has money!”

“Be content, thankful, forgiving, tolerant, and compassionate” are the characters most often written by Ms. Jan in calligraphy. She said Master Hsing Yun’s pursuits of the Four Givings, namely “giving joy, giving confidence, giving hope, giving convenience” are the words she lives by. Five years ago, upon receiving the Peace Contribution Award from the New York Chinese Parent-Student Federation, Ms. Jan remarked that “We are destined to leave everything behind after life ends. We need to come to this realization and try to pass on the arts and culture and humanity’s truth, compassion, and beauty!”

Once, one of Ms. Jan’s Heart Sutra work was stolen. At the moment, she thought, “I will pray for blessing to the person who stole my work in hope that he or she will mend his or her ways and turn over a new leaf.” She did not expect the work was returned to her the very next day. As a result of this incident, Ms. Jan firmly believes that our mind should be broadened and our vision should far-reaching. Buddhism ideals exist to benefit mankind; from caring to embracing the public.” There is more to life than money. A pursuit more worthy in value is to spread love to all corners!

Mastering the Three Unique Skills in Calligraphy at the Highest Level is Like Walking on Eggshells

Ms. Jan has mastered three unique skills in calligraphy. The first master skill is writing calligraphy on diversified mediums, such as eggs, shells, toothpicks, ceramics, bamboo, coral, and jade. The second master skill is creating fretwork calligraphy using thin brushes to create Buddhism figures, characters, maps and so on. The third master skill is to use Mondiau letter carving technique to write calligraphy on extremely small items, a feat that requires extraordinary skills.

With her elegant style and a pure heart, Ms. Jan began to create works with boundless creative inspirations, including transcribing the “Thousand Character Classic” on 63 toothpicks. Ms. Jan also transcribed a 20 character poem of Tung Dynasty on a single grain of rice which became a highly prized collector’s item.

Ms. Jan recalled one time after she ate with one of her friends, she then casually wrote calligraphy on three napkins, which later became a masterpiece work. Ms. Jan said, “Ink disperses easily on toothpick or napkin, and failure invariably results. Therefore, whenever I create calligraphy on such medium, it’s almost akin to treading on an eggshell; it requires full concentration and should be completed in one effort.” Ms. Jan smilingly explained that “Having inner peace is most important. If you attained true peace within yourself, it is sufficient to overcome any external force, and such force will not able to impact you negatively.” A person’s inner chi complements the person’s corresponding skill level in calligraphy.”

More Than Ten Million Characters Written. Lotus Sutra Work of Seventy-Thousand Words.

Over the years, Ms. Jan wrote more than ten million words. The time she spent on transcription is no less than 120,000 hours by her estimate. Her most acclaimed work titled ”Nine Screen Mahayana Lotus Sutra” is a hollowed out calligraphy fretwork of 70,000 words written in gold ink. It will inevitably become a valuable cultural asset.

Ms. Jan is the creator of “Taiwan the Formosa” work. Her fine brush hollowed-technique calligraphy works includes “Sutra about the Deep Kindness of Parents and the Difficulty of Repaying It, Forty-Two Chapter Scripture, Heart Sutra, Mangala Sutta, etc.” Ms. Jan in 2009 completed a map of the world using the hollowed-technique, in addition to a map of China using the same technique. In 2010, she completed “Compassion, Love, Sacrifice of Harmonious Society” in gold ink. In 2011, she created 366 characters of the Chinese character “longevity” calligraphy scroll. She treats each work as if it were her own child, with profound feelings attached to it.

Mr. Jan once transcribed “The Great Compassion Mantra” on a paper fan. She remarked, “The Great Compassion Mantra is comprised of 415 characters and written in pure gold; it is very special.” She credits many sponsors by providing her with the raw material or gold powder required for her creations.

Pride of Taiwan and Internationally Renowned Artist. Supporting Charitable Causes and Accumulating Good-Will through Calligraphy.

Ms. Jan is a rare internationally renowned female calligrapher who is also the pride of Taiwan. She is committed to promoting the art of calligraphy and the Chinese culture. Her works are unanimously praised by world leaders. In 1996, when the King of Thailand Adulyadej celebrated his 50th anniversary to the throne, Ms. Jan presented a calligraphy gift written in English and Chinese for the occasion, and was widely reported in the national media. Presently, the Presidential Palace houses five of Ms. Jan’s works, including the inauguration proclamations of present and past presidents, including President Lee Teng-hui, President Chen Shui-bian, and President Ma Ying-Jeou. The Presidential Palace also houses a ceramic calligraphy work featuring the “Thousand Character Classic”.

In recent years, Ms. Jan has been outstanding in promoting cross-strait cultural exchanges. The senior leaders on both sides who have seen work praised her unique style of calligraphy skill, which is comparable to the collection of works in the Imperial Palace. According to Mr. Xu Jialu, President of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching, Ms. Jan’s works are valuable because they are for charity and not sold publically; instead they are becoming prized artworks among art collectors.

In Beijing, a number of world leaders have seen Ms. Jan’s work “A Peaceful Negotiation Creates a Win for All”. The main text of Ms. Jan’s recently created fretwork calligraphy “China Dream” comes from Mr. Xi Jinping inaugural speech when he took office. Currently, Ms. Jan’s calligraphy works, such as “China Map”, and “Compassion, Love, Sacrifice of Harmonious Society” are being exhibited in Guangdong Youhe Group headquarters.

In 2012, Youhe Group President Mr. Jan Yuxiang won the bid for Ms. Jan’s Heart Sutra written on a stone in which she brought back from Bhutan. Mr. Jan Yuxiang emphasized that he was not merely buying a calligraphy work but rather he wants to initiate a meaningful gesture to support the establishment of Ms. Jan Arts Centre to promote Chinese culture. At that time, the Radium Life Tech Group Chairman Mr. Lin Rongxien also supported Ms. Jan’s work through charitable auctions. Ms. Jan received significant support and encouragement from Mr. Lin Rongxien, and later presented him with “Great Compassion Mantra and Heart Sutra” work written on a handheld fan as a gesture of her appreciation.

A Heartfelt Desire to Bless and Benefit All. Promoting Social Harmony and Common Prosperity.

Throughout the years, Ms. Jan’s works aim to promote world harmony and prosperity for all. She said, “My only desire is to bless everyone, and think of what I can do for others.” When a devastating earthquake struck Taiwan on September 21, 1999, she decided to auction off her “Lotus Sutra” work with more than 70,000 characters written on a silk cloth, with all proceeds going to charity aiding the victims of the quake. The work is currently housed in the Nantou Monastery.

For Buddha Master Hsing Yun’s 70th birthday, Ms. Jan presented him with a work comprised of the Diamond Sutra and the Heart Sutra as a birthday gift. For Mr. Chiang Weiguo’s 70th birthday, Ms. Jan presented to him with a birthday gift that contains calligraphy written in another form of well-wishing. She recalled that, many years ago, she also created “Hundred Longevity Drawing” for Master Wuming of Himing Temple, to help celebrate his 100th birthday.

Ms. Jan’s experience and reputation is well known in the calligraphy circle. She counts many celebrities among her friends, Mr. Lee Teng-Hui, Mr. Lien Chan, Mr. Wang Jin-Ping, Mr. Wu Den-Yih, Mr. Wu Poh-Hsiung are all collector of her works. In addition to the calligraphy of Buddhist themes, Ms. Jan uses quotes of famous figures when creating her works. The subjects of her contents are not fixed. Her character calligraphy of “Blessing and Longevity” is unique and a favorite among collectors.

Ms. Jan said that “Thousand Character Classic”, now on display in the United Nations is one of her favorite works. Additionally, her creation of “Top-Notch Umbilical-Cord Blood” logo comprised of characters from the Diamond Sutra and written using the hollowed-out technique is a meaningful cultural heritage work.

In 2016 Ms. Jan is elected as the President of the Chinese International Tourism Association.

“Determination paves the way to accomplishment.” Ms. Jan said. She referred to Buddism’s “Six Perfections” as the perfections of giving/charity, ethics/morality, patience, effort/perseverance, mediation/concentration, and wisdom. For her, promoting Buddhism through calligraphy means dedicating herself to help others and bring blessing for the masses. This is her aspiration, her way of making friends and a way to practice her Buddhism beliefs.

“All the saints and sages are distinguished by the Unconditioned Dharma.” Ms. Jan said. Our natural instincts and behaviors differ from person to person. If one practices charity without asking for things in return, such merits are immeasurable. At the present, Ms. Jan constantly ponders how to best combine the art of calligraphy and Buddhism to bring out the best of ourselves, and to make the world a more peaceful and harmonious place.

In reality, although Ms. Jan’s calligraphy is steeped in traditional themes, each work displays exquisite craftsmanship showing compassion beyond creativity. Her calligraphy, in addition to showcasing her creative soul, is also skillfully done. Her works sincerely encourage individuals to strive to be better. Since Ms. Jan gives vitality to each work, people will naturally feel the power of the Buddhism compassion.

Determination Pave the Way to Accomplishment. Challenge the Impossible

Ms. Jan once used blue-and-white and underglaze red pigment on a porcelain creation. She has also drawn Lotus Guanyin and Carp Guanyin on nine screens. These are highly difficult works. Ms. Jan remembered when she first drew on porcelain, the color would not stay on. She did not give up. She kept trying and she was able to create the perfect works on these unique materials.

To write calligraphy on porcelain, the wrist must remain very still in the air and it is extremely difficult. Ms. Jan said “When the works are in the kiln, they are easily cracked so the risk of failure is high.” She said sometimes after she completes a difficult work, it crack or breaks after been in the kiln, after which it is no longer usable and need to be tossed out. She then had to repeat the process all over again.

“I especially want to thank Mrs. Wu, wife of Mr. Wu Poh-Hsiung for her encouragements. I became persistent and created many works of ceramic art.” Ms. Jan believes that “while the writing of calligraphy characters may end, the meanings to the characters themselves do not end“. There are untold stories behind the creation of each piece of work. The hardships endured during the creation process truly reflect the masterful skills that were put forth in each work.

“The heart is in peace, free of external distractions”. This quote reflects Ms. Jan’s mental attitude when writing calligraphy. Ms. Jan said she is completed dedicated to complete each piece of work.” She sometimes would retreat to work in solitude, and get by with only a steam bun or vegetarian food. “My heart remains unadulterated. Only when I experienced the Five Skandhas of Emptiness, may my mind remain calm. Otherwise if the mind is preoccupied with ‘color, sound, smell, taste, touch, or object of mind’, then those distractions will preclude me from writing calligraphy precisely.”

Ms. Jan once drew the Statue of Liberty with calligraphy using cinnabar. Many other lengthy Buddhism scriptures are transcribed in gold inks. The material is expensive and there is no room for error. Ms. Jan has to remain careful each step of the way. Ms. Jan said, “Previously, I’ve learned to paint, so I understand the “error-free” nature of writing calligraphy. But it is also this very nature that makes calligraphy most challenging.” She smiled and added “In the art of calligraphy, I like the challenge the impossible.”

Glove Puppet Character Su Huan-Tseng. Drawing by Calligraphy a Most Astounding Feat

In all her creations, Ms. Jan thinks the Pili glove puppet character Su Huan-Tseng is the most difficult character to convert into drawing using calligraphy. “Because the sleeves flail in the wind and the character outlines are most complex; this proves to be the toughest challenge.” she said.

“Half spirit, half saint, and half immortal, the way of Confucianism and Daoism should be admired.“ On September 16, 2014, during Pili International Multimedia Company’s press conference before the company went public, Ms. Jan presented the company with a work that recites the aforementioned quote of Su Huan-Tseng. The couplet was written in the fretwork style using gold ink. This “culture and creative” calligraphy work became the highlight of the press conference.

Mrs. Liu Lihui, wife to Pili International Multimedia Company’s chairperson said the couple had met Ms. Jan in 1998. She and her husband Mr. Huang Chiang-Hua saw the image of Eternal Wheel of life during a visit to Ms. Jan’s home and had formed a close relationship with each other ever since. Mrs. Liu Lihui said Ms. Jan writes calligraphy to promote Buddhism and bless others. “Ms. Jan’s compassion, love, and sacrifice transform worries into Buddhism wisdom. Not only are we blessed with happiness; she is also a model for us to emulate.”

Ms. Jan said she completed a 40,000 characters drawing of Su Huan-Tseng using calligraphy. The Su Huan-Tseng drawing in the fretwork style contains introductions to Pili International Multimedia Company. Additionally, calligraphy in the thin-brush style includes five-thousand characters of the Diamond Sutra transcribed three times, two-thousand characters Bodhisattva Universal Door transcribed 5 times, two-thousand characters of The Sutra about the Deep Kindness of Parents and the Difficulty of Repaying It transcribed three times, five-thousand characters of Pharmacist Sutra transcribed one time, one thousand characters of Buddha Amitabha Sutra transcribed one time, two-hundred characters Heart Sutra transcribed 6 times. Ms. Jan recalled that one day in 2014, when she was working on Su Huan-Tseng’s image with The Sutra about the Deep Kindness of Parents and the Difficulty of Repaying It, Mrs. Liu Lihui called her and told her that Mrs. Liu’s mother had just passed away. Ms. Jan consoled her. Afterwards, each character of the scripture Ms. Jan transcribed was dedicated to bless her mother in the afterlife.

Mrs Liu Lihui pointed out her life has repeatedly been tested for the past ten years. “Every time adversity presented itself, Ms. Jan would lead me like an incarnation of Buddha, telling me to let go of my stubbornness, learn to accept my burden and be more tolerant.”

Ms. Jan stressed painting and calligraphy is most difficult on the spiritual level. She said “Though invisible, it ‘moistens all things softly in silence.’ Much like the character Su Huan-Tseng is knowledgeable in the three school’s (Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism) thoughts and martial arts. He eventually became the unified leader and even dispensed teachings of the three schools. Although I do not possess Su Huan-Tseng’s martial arts skills, I have suffered adversity in life so it is natural for me to counsel others spiritually, in addition to spread blessings to others through transcribing the scriptures.”

From a Simple and Sincere Heart to the Making of a Great Calligrapher

A look back at Ms. Jan’s calligraphy art and religious life inspires concentration, perseverance, endurance, and effort!

Ms. Jan recalled that 20 years ago she suffered from an auto-immune condition. Her weight ballooned to 78 kg, and she even had trouble walking. The doctor wanted her hospitalized and immediately undergoes surgery.

“I began transcribing the Pharmacist Sutra and later I was cured” Ms. Jan said, transcribing the Buddhist scriptures has been an enlightening experience. She practices the teachings of Buddhism so she is able to change and adapt her thinking when encountering difficulties in life. Ms. Jan strives to “cultivate one’s true-self by utilizing untruths”, and adheres to the principles “compassion without regret, sadness without wish, giving without asking return”. She recognizes of the impermanent nature of all phenomena, and was able to think outside of the box and see her troubles as an opportunity for her to put her Buddhism beliefs to practice. Going against the convention enabled her to foster more relationships as she is gradually on the path to wisdom.

Ms. Jan believes Buddhism and calligraphy principles are closely interlinked. Both require learning to remove one’s self ego, and let the mind revert to its original pristine form. For her, art is not divided along the lines of religion or race. As long as the cause is for the greater good, she will not hesitate to do it. Therefore, Ms. Jan’s works are not limited only to Buddhist transcriptions. She also transcribed many famous quotations of the Bible. For example, she once transcribed and completed a hollowed fretwork image of Jesus using 30,000 characters of Psalms.

In 2003, a friend of Ms. Jan (who accompanied her to Bhutan for pilgrimage) said, Bhutan is a pristine land, where the children are simple and happy. Such sentiment reflects the wording of a passage in the Diamond Sutra, “Peace defines the Buddha. Humans are peaceful when born. Learn to let go of the self-ego and a compassionate heart arises.” Peace defines Buddha means to possess a simple and kind heart. It is this simple kindness which enabled Ms. Jan to create great masterpieces in ways that move and inspire all of us.ribing the Pharmacist Sutra and later I was cured” Ms. Jan said, transcribing the Buddhist scriptures has been an enlightening experience.
